AFROFEST Marketplace *

The AFROFEST Marketplace is one of the most dynamic and highly attended components of the festival, serving as a vibrant cultural and economic hub that highlights African creativity, entrepreneurship, and community engagement. Located within the festival grounds at Woodbine Park, the marketplace features a diverse range of vendors offering authentic African cuisine, fashion, crafts, jewellery, textiles, art, and cultural products from across Africa and the global African diaspora.

Each year, the AFROFEST Marketplace brings together over 90 vendors and community exhibitors, the majority of whom are African and Black-owned small businesses based in the Greater Toronto Area and across Canada. The marketplace provides entrepreneurs with a valuable opportunity to showcase their products and services to tens of thousands of festival attendees, generating income, expanding their customer base, and increasing visibility for culturally rooted businesses.

Beyond its commercial activity, the marketplace plays an important role in supporting economic empowerment and community development by creating opportunities for emerging entrepreneurs, artisans, and food vendors to participate in a large-scale cultural event. It also fosters connections between vendors, cultural organizations, and the broader public, strengthening networks within Toronto’s diverse communities.

In addition to food and retail vendors, the AFROFEST Marketplace includes community information booths, cultural organizations, and social enterprises, providing resources, outreach opportunities, and educational engagement for festival audiences.

By supporting small businesses and showcasing African cultural products and traditions, the AFROFEST Marketplace contributes to the festival’s mission of celebrating African heritage, promoting cultural exchange, and advancing economic opportunities within the African and Black communities in Canada.

Children’s Creative Village

The AFROFEST Children’s Creative Village is a dedicated family-friendly space within the festival designed to engage children and youth through creative, educational, and culturally enriching activities. The program provides young participants with opportunities to explore African cultures, traditions, and artistic expressions in an interactive and welcoming environment.

Through hands-on workshops and activities, children are introduced to elements of African heritage such as storytelling, traditional music and dance, arts and crafts, drumming, face painting, and cultural games. These activities are designed to foster creativity, curiosity, and cross-cultural understanding while providing families with meaningful opportunities to experience African culture together.

The Children’s Creative Village plays an important role in AFROFEST’s commitment to community engagement and cultural education. It encourages young people from diverse backgrounds to learn about the richness and diversity of African traditions while promoting values of inclusion, respect, and cultural pride.

By creating a safe and inspiring space for children and families, the AFROFEST Children’s Creative Village helps cultivate the next generation of artists, cultural leaders, and global citizens, while ensuring that the festival remains accessible and welcoming to audiences of all ages.

Drum Zone

The AFROFEST Drum Zone is an interactive cultural space that celebrates the central role of drumming in African traditions. In many African societies, drumming is more than music—it is a powerful form of communication, storytelling, and community expression that brings people together across generations.

Hosted by African Drums and Art Crafts, the Drum Zone offers festival attendees the opportunity to experience the energy and rhythm of traditional African drumming and dance in a welcoming, hands-on environment. Participants of all ages are invited to learn basic drumming techniques, explore traditional rhythms, and engage with experienced facilitators who share the cultural significance of these musical traditions.

The Drum Zone creates a vibrant participatory experience where audiences move beyond watching performances to actively engaging with African cultural practices. By encouraging public participation, the program promotes cultural education, artistic exploration, and a deeper appreciation for the rich musical heritage of Africa.

As one of the festival’s most interactive spaces, the AFROFEST Drum Zone strengthens the festival’s mission to celebrate African culture while fostering community connection, creativity, and cross-cultural learning.
